Medium Flood Likely In Mahanadi; SRC Puts 13 Districts On Alert

Bhubaneswar: In view of possible medium flood in Mahanadi River and its distributaries following heavy rain in lower catchment areas, Special Relief Commissioner Bishnupada Sethi on Tuesday asked Collectors of 13 districts to stay alert for any exigency.

District authorities of Bolangir, Boudh, Kalahandi, Subarnapur, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Angul, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Jajpur have been asked to remain ready with plans to tackle possible flood situation.

Water Resources department has informed that around 11.5 lakh cusec flood water will pass Mundali barrage between 6 am and 10 am on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Hirakud Dam will also release its season’s first flood water at 11 AM today. Present water level at the dam is 618.21 ft while the total capacity of the reservoir is 630 ft. Water inflow into the dam is 1,40,784 cubic ft/sec while the outflow is 16,844 cubic ft/sec. Even though it is yet to be clear as to how many number of gates will be opened for floodwater discharge, the dam authorities has asked the people living in the lower catchment areas of Mahanadi riverbed to stay alert in view of rise in water level in the dam.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday reviewed the situation at the Secretariat and held discussions with the Collectors through video conferencing. He directed the administration to intensify patrolling on banks of rivers to keep track of flood situation.
